I & Familiars & Familiar Places

Exhibition Statement

Individuation is the becoming path to being we all travel. The artist self-portrait is a means of assessing where one stands in the journey. Artists have long created self-portraits as a means of understanding and making the passage.

Along the way we make connections to and form relationships with nature. The manifestation of these relationships in animal form, in the form of familiars is an ancient tradition. Familiars are chosen by the individual, or familiars choose the individual. Either way, they both reveal and conceal the character of the person since an animal familiar is said to both serve and protect the individual. Relationships to places have a power over us and empower us whether we choose them or they are chosen for us.

The images in this exhibition are telling, but also keeping the mystery that necessitates the making of more images.
